Frustrated by the prevalence of expensive yet cheaply built veneer-on-MDF construction used in many well-known humidors and yet inspired by my love of premium cigars, I designed what I think of as a climate-controlled cigar vault. I build these using classic box joinery techniques that accommodate natural wood movement under varying humidity levels, while preventing humidity loss.
Built to be passed down for generations — because good cigars deserve engineering, not marketing.
The idea for this humidor came from my passion for cigars and my desire to create a storage solution that was both functional and a work of art. I wanted to design a humidor that not only preserved cigars perfectly but also served as a stunning centerpiece in any room.
The development process involved meticulous attention to detail, from selecting the finest materials to perfecting the craftsmanship. Each humidor is handmade, ensuring that every piece is unique and of the highest quality. Traditional joinery techniques were chosen specifically to manage the wood movement caused by the high humidity environment inside. The humidor includes features that are not visible in the completed box. This includes wax impregnated cotton seals filling the dado grooves that the lid and base sit in, moisture barriers between the outer box walls and the spanish cedar lining, and my own unique lid stay design that uses tungsten counterweights and kevlar cordage to prevent the lid from falling open, etc.
Box joinery techniques that handle wood movement under humidity — no veneers, no shortcuts
Precision humidity management to maintain ideal storage conditions for premium cigars
Designed and built to last generations, not just years
Created the 'Vellum & Flame' product line as a personal artisan brand
This humidor shows that I apply the same engineering discipline to personal projects as I do to professional ones. I didn't just build a box — I researched wood behavior under humidity cycling, chose joinery methods with purpose, and created a brand around a product that solves a real problem in a market full of compromises.
Whether it's a patented coffee system or a handmade humidor, I bring the same rigor and care to everything I build. Let's talk about what we can create together.
